Salem…..
Nina L. (Lapi) Vickers, age 65, beloved wife for 41 years of Russ Vickers of Salem died at home Thursday afternoon.
Born and raised in Rochester, NY the daughter of Louis and Edith (Harmon) Lapi, she was educated in Rochester schools. While in high school she studied the violin and had the opportunity to study abroad, spending a year in Rome immersed in Italian. Her father was proud of their Italian heritage and encouraged her to spend a summer at Middlebury College's Italian summer program. Following her graduation from high school, Class of 1959, Nina received her Bachelor's degree with honors, in Geography from the University of Wisconsin in only three years. She was a gifted linguist fluent in Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French.
She then pursued her law degree at the University of Wisconsin where she met her husband, Russ. They married in 1966 shortly after graduation and moved to New Jersey where she was admitted to the bar and became an attorney for the Veteran's Administration. A few years later Nina established a private law practice.
In the early 1980's Nina and her husband moved to New York. She became a level 1 figure skater, competing in New York and was asked to become a model for an ice-skating clothing company. A Coast Guard licensed Captain, Nina enjoyed sailing and operated a charter boat business for many years. She moved to Salem in 1993 when the family acquired Hawthorne Cove Marina.
Many enjoyed her talents as a Harpist, as Nina played in countless venues throughout the North Shore. She enjoyed sharing her gift of music and designed all own costumes. During the summer months, she would play her harp on Sunday mornings at Hawthorne Cove Marina. She appeared regularly at Crosby's Markets. Recently when hospitalized, she played her harp in her room, for the patients and staff to brighten their day.
Active in the community, her love of gardening was contagious. Nina not only introduced others to gardening, she got people involved. Her talents are seen in many locations including the gardens of Hawthorne Cove Marina, the beautification of the South River and her design and introduction of the "Montauk Daisy" in the plantings along the waterfront of Shetland Industrial Park.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers Louis Lapi and his wife Gail of Vancouver, Canada and Tony Lapi and his wife Angie of Sanibel Island, FL; a sister Maria Drumm of Baltimore, MD and several nieces and nephews.
