Nicholas "Nick" Tgettis, age 90, passed away on December 22, 2023. Born and lived most of his life in Salem, Nick was the son of the late Florence (Zacapoulas) and Criss Tgettis. Nick went on to graduate from Salem High School in the class of 1951 and later enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean war in New York and Wyoming (Crash 33/Special Crypto Project and base dispatcher).
In 1960, he earned a bachelors degree in music composition (BM) from New England Conservatory of Music and in 1969 a masters of music (MM) from Boston University. Nick taught music education in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. His passion for music started at age 9. He composed an array of original pieces for piano, voice, violin, string quartet, opera, chorale, small ensembles, and full orchestral pieces. Many performed in the North Shore area and elsewhere. He sang in the choir at St. Vasilios Greek Church in Peabody, where he played the organ for many years. Nick was known for his sense of humor and was well loved by all who met him.
His many interests and passions included all types of history- especially Greek and Roman, Colonial New England to 1783, local and family- social studies, languages, coins, stamps, trains, weather, Massachusetts Lottery and trips to the casino with seniors and friends.
Nick was very family oriented and family historian. He loyally cared for his disabled brother, Harry, for many years and was always keenly aware of each of his seven brothers and sisters, their children, and grandchildren.
Nick is survived by his sister Helen George of Danvers and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his 3 brothers and 3 of his sisters.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday January 3, 2024 beginning at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Church, located at 5 Paleologos St, Peabody, MA 01960. The burial will be private. Visiting hours will take place on Tuesday January 2, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, located at 85 Federal St. Salem, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Vasilios Greek Church or St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
