Nancy "Nan" (Doyle) Quigley, age 81, wife of the late City of Salem Commissioner of Public Works, Charles F. Quigley, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, December 15, 2011.


Born In Melrose, MA the daughter of the late Arthur Hastings Doyle and the late Editha Augusta (Sharkey) Doyle, she was raised and educated In Belmont. Following her graduation from Belmont High School, Mrs. Quigley received her Bachelor's of Art Degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and her Master's of Education Degree from Boston University. She then became a teacher in the Arlington school system for a few years until marrying her late husband and beginning a family.


A loving, dedicated mother and wife, she was a stay and home mom and enjoyed raising her family and being involved in their activities. Mrs. Quigley had also been an active parishioner of St. Agnes Church in Arlington and St. Eulalia's in Winchester. More recently she had attended Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Marblehead.


An avid golfer participating in several woman's leagues, she had also been a member of the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead for over 45 years. She had been extremely active with the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (M.A.R.E) and combined these interest by establishing, with her late husband, both an annual charity golf tournament and sailing regatta at the Boston Yacht Club, which continues with her children's enthusiasm. Not long ago, Mrs. Quigley was presented the M.A.R.E Gift of Hope Award for her tireless efforts.

She is survived by five children, Elizabeth Quigley and her husband Shaun Tucker of Pittsfield, MA; Martha A. Quigley and her husband Greg Allen of Marblehead, Charles Francis Quigley and his wife Janet (Dauphinee) Quigley of Winthrop,Paula R. DeVoe and her husband Mark and Michael W. Quigley of North Andover; five grandchildren Ben and Caroline Vannah and Michael, Jack and Brian Quigley. Also survived by Sister-in-law MaryAlice (Quigley) Kelley and her husband Fred, and Sisters-in-laws Joan(Porter) Quigley and Gloria (Innes) Quigley and 23 loving nieces and nephews.


She was predeceased by a brother Richard Hastings Doyle and his wife Sara (Heenan) Doyle.


A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 9:00 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal ST (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead, MA 01945. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend., Visiting hours will be on Monday from 3:00 PM to 7:00PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
