Muriel P. (Millett) Ahearn age 78, of Salem died Tuesday evening in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers. She and her husband William M. Ahearn had celebrated 50 years of marriage on January 25, 2009.
Born in Salem the daughter of the late Edward J. and Bertha A. (Bergeron) Millett, she was educated in Salem Schools, enjoyed playing C.Y.O Basketball and graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1948. Mrs. Ahearn then served in the United States Navy for over five years until being discharged from the Naval Air Station at Quonset Pt, RI.
A dedicated mom and later grandmother, Muriel remained active in the activities of her family and had served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She loved sports and had played both volleyball and softball for a number of years, sometimes on teams which competed against her children. Mrs. Ahearn was also an avid bowler and had been an active member of the Peabody Senior Citizens Drill Team.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children Kathleen M. Garrett and her husband Billy of Austin, TX, Maureen J. Ahearn of North Reading, William M. Ahearn Jr. and his wife Maryanne of Salem, Karen P Szczechowicz, MD and her husband Scott of Middleton and Eileen M. Ahearn of Andover, MA; a brother Robert Millett of Woburn; a sister Bertha Sylvanowicz of Beverly; seven grandchildren William III, Ashton, Curtis, Katelyn, Scott, Shane and Kevin and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers Edward, Charles and Roger Millett.
Her Funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2:00 P.M to 4:00 P.M and 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Interment will be in ST Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
