Mildred (Millie) Weir, 98, of Salem, Mass, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 after a brief illness.
Mildred was born in England and lived with her parents and younger sisters, Kath and Pat in Manchester, England. She spent her teen and young adult years volunteering and working to assist the war efforts during WWII.
Mildred married James Weir after the war and had two children, Susan and Jennifer, before moving to the U.S. in 1953 with Jim and the children. Mildred's sister, Pat, and their parents joined them in Salem the following year. After moving to Salem, Linda, John, and Cindy were born.
Mildred and Jim became U.S. citizens and enjoyed a good life with their 5 children until Jim died in 1971. Mildred became a widow at age 47.
After her husband's untimely death, Mildred continued with her plans to open a tea room and store called the Lavender Basket that she operated for a number of years and then worked in Almy's and Daniel Low's until her retirement.
Very active in her retirement, in addition to her accomplishment of writing a romantic novel, Lilac Cottage, Mildred was an accomplished sewer, knitter, crafter, artist, and cook. Her many talents were appreciated by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends. She also was an avid shopper.
Mildred is survived by her children: Susan Carson of Billerica, Jennifer Dulong of Peabody, Linda Salvo and husband Peter of Danvers, John Weir and his wife Christine of Peabody, and Cindy Weir and her fiancé Edward Cook of Salem, her brother-in-law Robert McCarthy of Stratham, NH, and her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren who all will miss her very much.
Visiting hours for Mildred will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, Mass on Thursday, October 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be held at Murphy's Funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mildred's name to Grace Church in Salem, Mass.
