Michael R. Usovicz of Beverly Farms passed away on January 22, 2016 after a prolonged illness. He was 55 years old.
Born on June 3, 1960 in Salem, Mike was the youngest of six children of Stanley J. Usovicz, Sr. and Alice (Holleran) Usovicz. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a bachelor's degree in Public Service: Law and Justice. During his college years, Mike enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served seven years of active duty as an Assault Amphibian Officer. Following active duty, he went on to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves for fifteen years as an Infantry Company Executive Officer and Company Commander. He was reactivated after September 11, 2001 and served as a Mission Planner and Marine Component Representative to the Joint Forces Command, Homeland Security Directorate. Mike retired from the Reserves in 2006 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Following his active duty in the Marine Corps, Mike joined the Boston office of the Environmental Protection Agency where he worked for 22 years as a Special Agent conducting criminal investigative field work and serving as the liaison to the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force. He retired from the EPA in September of 2015.
Mike had a lifelong love of history and sailing. He was devoted to the Beverly Farms neighborhood where he lived with his family and especially enjoyed spending summer evenings with his children and friends at West Beach in Beverly. Sailing on his boat with his sons or tinkering with vintage cars were among his favorite pastimes. Witty and observant, he was quick with a conversational quip and was a born storyteller.
Mike is survived by his five children: Caroline, Jennifer, Michael and James Usovicz, his step-daughter, Emma McLin Roberts, and by his four siblings: Alyce Davis of Salem, MA, Stanley J. Usovicz, Jr. of Salem, MA, Elizabeth Usovicz of Westwood, Kansas and Eileen Usovicz of Prairie Village, Kansas along with their spouses, and by his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife Susan M. Usovicz of Ipswich, MA.
Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, on Wednesday January 27th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Services will be held at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 672 Hale St, Beverly on Thursday, January 28th at 10:00 a.m.
