IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maureen L.
Buckley
March 1, 1937 – October 4, 2023
Maureen "Penny" L. Buckley, 86, of Danvers, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023. On that crystal clear October evening, she left us quietly and was ushered into Heaven.
Penny was born in Malden, Massachusetts and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1954. Penny attributed her excellent education to the good Catholic Sisters who taught her through the years. After high school, Penny worked for a while and then went on to marry and raise a family. When the children were old enough, Penny went to work to "pay for braces" but quickly began a career where she rose to hold subsequent executive positions at New Hampshire Good Roads Association and New Hampshire Motor Transport. These were groundbreaking positions for a woman at the time. During this same time period, Penny enrolled in college at New Hampshire Technical Institute and earned her degree in 1982. Eventually, after her marriage ended, Penny decided to relocate back to Massachusetts and made a major career change becoming an executive assistant in the Trusts and Estates department at the Boston law firm of Nutter, McClennen & Fish. Penny loved her job and worked at the law firm for many years until her retirement. Not one for sitting on the sidelines, Penny immediately turned to volunteer work where she contributed until the pandemic resulted in the loss of her volunteer positions. She loved contributing and worked into her early 80's.
Penny had a small group of women friends with whom she enjoyed many experiences. She was well traveled and made multiple trips to Europe as well as many other destinations. She was an avid reader and started each day by having a cup of tea and reading The Boston Globe from cover to cover. She enjoyed what she called "Cheap Thrills" like free concerts at Salem Willows, walking the beach and picking up bits of beach glass, looking at cloud formations in the blue sky and the first flowers of spring.
Penny is survived by her sister Margaret "Peg" O'Hare, brother Daniel Buckley and his wife Nancy, children Susan Champa and her partner Bob, Christine Champa and her partner Val, James Champa and his wife Kristie, Steven Champa and his wife Shannon, 5 grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, Dora.
Visitation hours for Penny will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem, MA on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 10:00 to 12:00 noon followed immediately by a memorial service at the same location. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
