Mary V. Miller, 100, Former Saltonstall, St. Thomas Teacher – March 24 in Newburyport
Mary was born on December 6, 1914 in Salem, the child of Joseph Michaels and Josephine Brawders. She attended St. James school, graduated from Salem HS and was the first in her family to attend college. She received a teaching certificate from Salem Teachers College in 1936 and taught in Salem schools for over ten years.
She taught at St. Thomas the Apostle school where she became a much beloved third grade teacher and one of the first lay teachers in area parochial schools. She later retired from Salem schools. She was a long-time parishioner at St. Thomas Church.
Married in 1943 to Leroy Miller of Malden who died in 1999, she outlived her four younger siblings. Marjorie(Bill) Murch of Beverly, Joseph(Rita) of Lynn, John(Ginny) and Philip(Bea) of Salem. She resided at Port Healthcare in Newburyport for the last seven years.
Mary loved her entire family. She loved to take Sunday car rides, read the local paper, play cards with friends, watch Little League and Prep football games and travel cross country by car and train.
She is survived by her two sons, Steve and his wife Trish(Anton) of Decatur, IL and Greg and his wife Gerry(Lucey) of Newburyport.
Her six grandchildren and spouses include Eric and Karen of North Andover, Karen and Tim Walsh of West Hartford, CT, Marybeth and Pat O'Keefe of Salem, Stephanie and Joe Greco of Poway, CA, Matthew and Amy of Grinnell, IA, and Michael of Chicago. She was blessed with ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Gram passed away very peacefully. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Port Healthcare as well as Laurie and Kelly from Fidelis Hospice who made her last few months so comfortable. Funeral services will be held at 10:30a on April 25th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, One Margin St, Peabody. Visitation will be from 9:00a to 10:15a.m. in the church.
