Obituary

Mary Murphy Landergan of Marblehead passed away on October 11, 2022. Mary was the beloved wife of the late William J. Landergan Jr., with whom she shared 61 years of marriage.  Mary was the daughter of the late Frances J. Murphy and Louise (Brophy) Murphy of Salem. She will be dearly missed by her son William J. Landergan III and his wife Kathe, James F. Landergan and his wife Cathy and her daughter Linda Hanratty and her husband James Hanratty.  She leaves behind her grandchildren William (Joe) Landergan IV and his wife Sara, Olivia Mitchell and her husband Sam Mitchell, Sean Landergan, Hannah Landergan, Ryan Hanratty and his wife Christie Fitzgerald Hanratty, Allison Hanratty and Meagan Hanratty.  She also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, William (Will) J. Landergan V, Margaret (Maggie) Landergan and Wyatt Mitchell born last week. She also leaves her brother Francis (Frank) J. Murphy.

Mary grew up in Salem and attended both St. James School and St. James High School.  She graduated from Emmanuel College in 1950 and taught second grade upon her graduation.

Mary was member of the Infant Of Prague Guild of Lynn, Catholic Charities of Lynn, Magic Lantern Players and the Lynn Shore Garden Club.  She also did fundraising for The United Way and Heart Fund.

Mary's love for travel started as a nine year old when her family took a month-long family cruise to Europe just prior to the outbreak of WWII, visiting several European countries.  Mary and her family were evacuated from Paris after Germany's annexation of Sudetenland during that trip.  She and Bill along with Mary's brother Franny went to Cuba for a long weekend and were there January 1, 1959 witnessing Castro's march into Havana to overthrew the Batista's government.  Since then, she had a passion for traveling the world, having visited five of the seven continents.

Mary had a lifelong love of the Corinthian Yacht Club where she and Bill were married in 1951.  She was also a former member of both Tedesco and Salem Country Clubs.  She truly loved her time at the Corinthian, sharing Friday nights on the porch with Bill and the family, enjoying the Goldfish and watching the beautiful sunsets.

Mary and Bill spent a great deal of time at their second home in Waterville Valley NH.  She enjoyed skiing and playing tennis in Waterville along with the beautiful foliage.   The family had many wonderful times in the White Mountains.

Mary's family would like to take this time to thank the staff at Jesmond Nursing Home for their wonderful care.
