Mary E. (McCarthy) Hilfinger age 88, of Beverly formerly of Winchester, died in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, Monday afternoon following a brief illness.
She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, William T. Hilfinger in 1987.

Born, raised, and educated in Glen Falls, NY, the daughter of Cornelius "Neil" and Nora (Murphy) McCarthy, she was educated at St Mary's Elementary School and High School. Mary Hilfinger met her husband during World War II and they married on November 11, 1943 (now known as Veteran's Day). After flying over 35 missions during World War II, Mr. Hilfinger returned home and they began a family.

An active parishioner of St. Eulalia Parish for many years the family moved to Winchester in 1962 where her children were educated. Mrs. Hilfinger is remembered by her children as the quintessential mother, devoted to her children, family and home. Her passion was being with her family. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately called her "Grammy". Following her husband's death, she moved to Beverly in 1995 to be closer to her family.

Mrs. Hilfinger is survived by two sons William T. and his wife Harriet Hilfinger of Manchester, NH and Robert and his wife Maureen Hilfinger of Beverly with whom she resided; five grandchildren Maggie Croteau, Caroline Merrill, Martha, Nora and Connor Hilfinger; four great grandchildren Billy, Maddie, Mary and Kate Croteau and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother John McCarthy and a sister Helen Donnelly.

Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St.) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Star's of the Sea School, 13 Chapman St., Beverly, MA 01915.
