Obituary

Mary Louise Gray, MD, 93 of Peabody, MA passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018.  Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on December 22, 1924, the daughter of the late Albert S. Gray, MD and the late Mary Louise (Hogan) Gray, she was raised and educated in West Hartford, CT.  She graduated from Barnard College in New York and graduated from the Long Island School of Medicine (later known as the Down State Medicine College), where she received her medical doctor degree.

Dr. Gray then began a career with Medical Mission Sisters in General Medicine working in Pakistan.  She would return to the United States from 1959 to 1962 at St. Louis University Medical School to train for obstetrics and gynecology; after that time, she returned to Pakistan.   She was present and passed her oral exam in Pakistan and her written exam in Turkey and was admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology (F.A.W.G.) in the Unites States.  Dr. Gray remained a member of the Medical Mission Sisters and worked tirelessly in the hospitals in Pakistan during the war between East and West Pakistan.   Then in 1972, Dr. Gray returned to St. Louis County Hospital serving as Chief of OB/GYN.  Eventually, she made her way back to the east coast, where she worked with Harvard Community Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital until her retirement in 1985.  Though Dr. Gray left the Medical Mission Sisters in 1972, she remained active in their community for the remainder of her life.   Dr. Gray was a champion for the less fortunate and for women's rights.  To her family and friends, she was a bright light that always brought much joy, she truly was a ray of sunshine.

Dr. Gray was predeceased by her twin brother Albert G. Gray of Cromwell, CT, her brother John Gray of Camillus, NY, her nephew Albert E. Gray of Canton, CT and her dear friend William Brouwer of Peabody, MA. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Mildred Gray of Camillus, NY and Betty Jane Gray, of Cromwell, CT.  She is also survived by her beloved niece Bonnie Gray (Mrs. Albert E. Gray) of Canton, CT, her niece Eileen Coates and her husband Eric Coates of Omaha, Nebraska, as well as many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She had many caring friends, especially Suzanne Gauthier of Quincy, MA and Desarae Myette of Peabody, MA.
