Mary Joan Ahern

Mary Joan Ahern, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, surrounded by love at the age of 92. Born on May 6, 1934, in Lynn, Massachusetts, Mary was a lifelong resident of the Salem community, where she cherished deep connections and created lasting memories. 

A proud graduate of Salem High School, Mary received the prestigious Daughters of the American Revolution Award, reflecting her commitment to heritage and community service. She dedicated her professional life to the public, serving as a clerk at the Salem Superior Court after her time with the B&M Railroad, all while embodying warmth, kindness, and an unparalleled work ethic. 

Mary was married to the love of her life, John Ahern, who predeceased her on September 1, 1991. Together, they shared countless joyful moments, dancing and enjoying jazz, which filled their lives with happiness. Family was everything to Mary, and she relished spending time with her children: Michael Ahern of San Francisco, Sean Ahern and his wife Donna of Danvers, Mary Ellen Gibb and her husband John of Lynn, and William Owen Ahern of Salem. Mary's heart swelled with pride as she adored her grandchildren, Heather and Amory Ahern, Patrick Gibb, and Ashley Ahern, and took great joy in her great-granddaughter, Lucia Van Dam. 

In her retirement, Mary thrived on adventure, traveling frequently, embracing new experiences, and fostering friendships through activities like water aerobics at the Salem YMCA and gardening in her beloved yard. She was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, dedicating time to assist those in need while nurturing her own spirit through acts of kindness.

Mary is survived by her loving brother, Henry Ahern and his wife Karen of Beverly, and the late Dorothy Curran. Her vibrant spirit, unmatched zest for life, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Visiting hour for Mary will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem from 4 to 7 pm. The celebration of Mary's remarkable life will take place on July 30 2026 at the Funeral home at 10 am followed by burial at Greenlawn Cemetery, 57 Orne St, Salem. We invite those who knew and loved Mary to join in a festive remembrance, honoring her legacy of joy, love, and compassion.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 158 Federal St, Salem, MA 01970 in Mary's memory, continuing her dedication to helping others. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all she touched, and we celebrate the extraordinary life she led.
