Mary Jane A. (Carr) Veronese, 88, of Peabody, MA passed away peacefully at Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge on the morning of July 5, 2019.  She was born in Salem, MA on September 11, 1930, daughter of the late William E.  and Julianna (Anna) Waldron Carr.

Mary Jane was a willing, active and enthusiastic participant in her life and the lives of all those around her.  She grew up with her five wonderful brothers all faithful members of St. Thomas' Parish, captaining the CYO Girls Basketball team. She graduated from Salem High School in the class of 1947 where she was Drum Majorette.

Upon graduating, she began working for the State of Massachusetts in the secretarial pool, learning all she could absorb while taking dictation for the state business and engineering departments.  She was posted for a time in the Chelsea Soldiers Home taking dictation during autopsies that furthered cancer and disease research.  This experience opened her world to new ideas and technologies and the infinite possibilities the future could hold with a little courage and hard work.

She married David Veronese in 1957 and they built a home and family in Peabody, MA. They loved traveling, collecting friends and enjoying family.  Widowed in 1968, Mary Jane went back to work full- time for Jordan Marsh and then the Peabody School Department, first as a secretary in the AV Library and then, after earning her MA State license, a pioneer in teaching new word processing technologies in the Vocational and High School Business Departments.   Mary Jane then moved to the private sector and was a principal at Professional Communication Systems and later at Am-Pro Mailing List Company in Danvers before retiring.

Mary Jane was an active member of St. John's Parish in Peabody, involved in the CYO, TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) and taught confirmation classes.  Later, she became an extraordinary minister and was involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends within the US, to Europe and Israel.  Mary Jane was an avid reader and was a member over the years in various candlepin bowling leagues.

For the past 17 months, Mary Jane had been residing in Dracut with her family who were blessed to have her near.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Ann and Eric van Opstal of Dracut, two grandsons Timothy and Andrew van Opstal, her cousin Sr. Patricia Keilty of Barrington, RI, sisters-in-law Katherine Carr of Contoocook, NH and Grace Carr of Salem, MA, many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors too numerous to list but no less dear to her heart.  Mary Jane was predeceased by her husband, David E. Veronese, her son, David Veronese, her brothers Rev. William E. Carr, John F. Carr and his wife Ruth, Edward Carr and his wife Theresa,  James V. Carr and Philip Stephen Carr as well as her brother-in-law John Paul Veronese and his wife Mary Jane.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, corner of North St, Salem, MA.  A Funeral Mass will be held on  Friday, July 12, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 17 Chestnut Street, Peabody, MA.
