Marjorie McIntosh Ives passed away on November 5, 2020 at Continuing Care of Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA at the age of 87.
Marge was born on July 5, 1933 in Boston, MA. She was the daughter of Everett John McIntosh and Helen Adams Pray McIntosh and raised in Weymouth, MA. After graduating from Weymouth High School, she followed in the footsteps of both her parents and sister, Dorothy to become a teacher. Marge attended Boston University School of Education and graduated on June 5, 1955. She first taught at the Countryside School in Newton and later at the Horace Mann School and Saltonstall Schools in Salem.
She married William Leonard Ives on August 14, 1955. Their first home was an apartment in Salem and they later built their house at 17 Surrey Road in Salem. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his death in 2007.
While raising her two sons, she attended Salem State College and received her Master's Degree in Education. For years she mentored both student and new teachers. Throughout her life travel was a source of great enjoyment for her, visiting over 20 countries.
Marge was a longtime member of Tabernacle Congregational Church in Salem. She and Bill were very active in the Couple's Club and were well known for hosting an outdoor steak cookout every June. They made many lifelong friends through the church. She was also active in P.E.O. and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She and Ray, her companion of the last 12 years, found a true home together at Brooksby Village. They made new friends, connected with old friends, and took part in many activities there.
Marge is survived by her two sons, David and his wife, Pam Burch of West Newbury, Richard and his wife Carol of Lockport, Illinois; her grandchildren, Jake, Carley, Graham, Spencer and his wife, Andrea; and her companion, Raymond Abbott. She is also survived by a niece, Susan Lundquest and two nephews, Steve and Scott Hamilton.
Marge was predeceased by her husband Bill and her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ernest Hamilton.
Donations in her memory, recognizing her 35 years as a public school teacher, may be made to the Salem Education Foundation, 265 Essex Street, Salem, MA 01970.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visiting hours or service. The family will observe with a small graveside service at Green Lawn Cemetery in Salem next week.
