Marie D. (Campbell) O'Neil, 87, died peacefully Friday, September 30, 2022. She was the wife of Richard O'Neil, with whom she shared sixty-five years of marriage.
Born in Salem on July 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Louise (Mullarkey) Campbell. Marie was a graduate of the Salem High School class of 1953 and continued on to graduate from Boston College with a BS in Business Administration in 1959. After working for the telephone company and taking time as a homemaker, she got her teaching certification. She taught 6 th and 7 th grade for many years in Salem Public Schools before retiring. Not able to completely leave education, she continued teaching part time at St. Mary's Annunciation School in Danvers for another 20 years.
Marie was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish for 61 years. The first few of those were lived in Salem and then the family moved a mile over the city line into Peabody, still staying in the same parish. St. Thomas School and Bishop Fenwick High School were beneficiaries of her volunteering along with her other parish activities. Other interests included tennis, sewing, reading and travel. One of her favorite destinations was the family cottage on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH, where she enjoyed time with her grandchildren and lots of extended family and friends. Other seasons of the year had her traveling to Virginia to visit with her daughter and grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by her daughter Catherine (Kate) O'Neil and three grandchildren, Rostik, Katusha and Lilya Eberle, all of Reston Virginia, her sisters, Elaine McNiff of Danvers, Claire Tache of Danvers and Kathleen Sharp and her husband Robert of Peabody. She was predeceased by her other siblings, James, Eleanor, Paul and Dennis Campbell and also brothers-in-law Norman Tache and Edward McNiff. She also leaves behind many wonderful nieces and nephews and their families.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody. Mass will be live streamed at www.stjohnspeabody.org and scroll to live Mass. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are Wednesday, October, 5, 2022 from 4 – 7 P.M. at Murphy's Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem.
