IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marie Angela
(Giuggio) Hodge
October 24, 1928 – May 22, 2020
Marie (Giuggio) Hodge died peacefully at the age of 91, at The Brentwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Danvers on Friday, May 22, 2020, after succumbing to her bout with advanced Alzheimer's/dementia. During her illness, she was loved and cared for first by Landmark at Oceanview in Beverly, then at Brentwood. She thrived under the wonderful care of both facilities and her family is forever grateful to the outstanding staff at each. We thank them for their tenderness and compassion.
Born in Salem, MA, on October 24, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Josephine (Cannizzaro) Giuggio, who emigrated from Italy raising their family for many years in the "old Endicott Street neighborhood". She graduated from Salem High School in 1946. Before marriage and a move to Florida, she worked at New England Telephone and Sylvania.
She was a fun and loving wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister, sister-in-law, niece, aunt and great aunt. Throughout her life she took special pride in the many milestones of her many family members and loved them all, from her dear grandmother to her youngest dear grandniece and grandnephew and everyone in between.
Marie loved the outdoors and being active. In her younger days she lived a fun and happy life sharing her love of skiing with nephews and enjoying her sail boat with friends. She loved her Mercedes Benz and was equally ecstatic with her brand new 1965 Camaro in her favorite color - turquoise. Her humor was infectious. She loved gatherings and dancing and listening to Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. She joined the United States Navy in March of 1954. She was stationed in San Diego, and with her upbeat personality and buoyant sense of participation she made many friends. She was honorably discharged in December of 1957, continuing in the Naval Reserves until 1978. She would remain especially proud of her Navy days throughout her life.
Marie happily married her "prince", Bernard W. Hodge of England, in 1970. Bern was the quintessential English gentleman, and they made each other very happy until his death in 2013. They lived most of their married life in sunny Florida enjoying their home, music, art, friends, rounds of golf and three cats during their 43 years together.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Ralph and his wife Urseline, her nephew Billy Zbyszynski and niece Janice Giuggio Kodatt. She leaves her 3 sisters, Catherine (Kay) Morrocco of Peabody, Carmie Mirandi of Beverly and Jo-Ann Giuggio and her husband Joe Giunta of Nahant; her nephews Jack Morrocco and his wife Jodi, Jim Morrocco and his wife Suzan, Peter Mirandi and his wife Karen, Tom Mirandi and his wife Laura, Steven Mirandi and his wife Marie, and David Mirandi and partner Jane MacLeod; her nieces Donna Giuggio Lang, Paula Giuggio Shea and her husband Terry, Susan Mirandi Murphy and her husband Oscar Galvan, Cathy Morrocco Cronin and her husband Tom, Jane Zbyszynski and her husband Mark Toth, Nancy Zbyszynski Wilkes and her husband David, and Betsey Zbyszynski. She also leaves many grand nieces and nephews.
Marie will be missed by all. She kept us laughing. We will remember her with love and know that she is at peace.
