Mrs. Maria S. (Silva) Gil, age 90, wife of the late Manuel Gil of Peabody, died at home, late Tuesday evening following a long illness.
Born in Peabody, the daughter of the late Francisco and Rosa Luisa (Silva) Silva, she was raised and educated in Graciosa, Azores where she ha met and married her late husband. Their children were all born in Graciosa and in 1953, the family moved to Peabody where she began working n local leather shops. Mrs. Gil's jobs included New England Sportswear, where she made leather coats, as well as Dutchess Footwear, and Ideal Baby Shoe until her retirement.
A devout Catholic, Mrs. Gil enjoyed walking wherever she went. She was a member of the Holy Ghost and Our Lady of Fatima Church.
She is survived by two children, Maria Cunha, of Peabody, with whom she lived and Robert M. Gil; a sister in law, Maria B. Silva of Peabody; 7 grandchildren; 8 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son Paul J. Gil.
Her funeral will be held on Monday at 10:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 260 North St., Salem, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3:00 PM to 7:00PM Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
