Obituary

Margaret Ann (Peggy) Stone of Marblehead, MA passed away February 23, 2019, age 96, at Sunrise of Gardner Park, Peabody, MA. Born Margaret Ann Smart on September 21, 1922 in Hiwasse, Arkansas to James and Myrtle Smart (residents of Marblehead in later years); Peggy graduated with a BA and a pilot's license from Central Missouri Teacher's College class of 1941. She owned and flew her own airplane. She also worked for the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller in Kansas City, MO and then transferred to Boston, MA. She had the honor of being one of first women controllers in the United States.

Peggy married Harvey L. Stone (April 4, 1915 – August 31, 1997) whom she met while working at the FAA. Together they transferred to San Francisco where their son, James L. Stone, was born on May 1, 1944. James later passed away March 11, 2014.

Peggy and her family returned to Marblehead and hand built the home she lived in for the rest of her life, and loved dearly. She owned Harbor Town Flowers on Pleasant Street, providing flowers for numerous local weddings and other special events. She became President of the local Chamber of Commerce and was the first woman in Massachusetts to hold such an office. She served actively and tirelessly as founder, president, officer or committee member for many organizations. Notably, she founded Marblehead Festival of the Arts (she was honored at their 50th year celebration), she sat on Massachusetts Governor's Committee on Elder Affairs (for which she spoke on TV, holding interviews from the State House), as well as North Shore Elder Services and the Marblehead Senior Center. She served as director for Heritage Bank, and ran the Edith Dodge Memorial Fund for many years. She was a prominent member of Eastern Star.

Peggy was an avid golfer and played well into her 70's with her son and grandson in Florida. She was a rabid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins and attended many baseball and basketball games. She also grew an enormous garden at home on Peach Highlands. She lovingly referred to her garden as the "back forty." She canned, froze, and baked her garden's fruit and vegetables for years, donating them often.

Peggy loved music and sang in St. Stephen's Church choir. Peggy was very active and chaired many committees while spreading the love of God at St. Stephen's and throughout Marblehead and North Shore communities. She is survived by: Kay L. Stone, daughter-in-law, Sarasota, FL; John L. And Sarah M. Stone, Grandson and wife, Sacramento, CA; Brenda Viner, Niece, Tucson, AZ; Brother-in-law Alan R. Chandler, N.H.; Nieces - Karen Chandler, Susan Chandler, Denise Chandler and Joyce Chandler-Smith of MA, Colorado, N.H. and Maine. Peggy's family wishes to thank her friends and St. Stephen's Church community for their support and love in these final months; especially, Betsy Ganglani, Noreen Blanchard, Phil Somerby, Liane and Emma Irons - our heartfelt gratitude always.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial contribution to The Margaret A. Stone Memorial Fund at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead, MA 01945. Details will be forthcoming for a memorial service to be held in spring or early summer.
