Margaret (Trasher) Ireland, age 91, a longtime resident of Salem, wife of the late John B. Ireland, Sr., died at home unexpectedly on Monday June 1, 2009 in Franconia, NH.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Percy and Emma (LaForme) Trasher, she was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1935. Mrs. Ireland then joined the United States Navy on April 14, 1943 and had been stationed in Hawaii, Pensacola, FL, and Portsmouth, VA. At the end of her service she volunteered to remain on active duty for an additional two years.

Once discharged from the service, Mrs. Ireland became employed with the Federal Government's Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D) office in Boston for 33 years until retiring in 1983.

A loving mother, grandmother, and aunt she had traveled extensively, enjoyed going to the theater, shopping and being with her family, especially her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Later in life Mrs. Ireland took up the game of golf.

Mrs. Ireland is survived by a son John B. Ireland and his wife Sandra of Franconia, NH with whom she had resided more recently; three grandchildren J. Brinson Ireland, III, Julianne Emma Ireland and Leigh Percy Ireland all of northern New Hampshire; three sisters Lorraine Sadoski of Salem, Martha Carey of Marblehead and Carol Smith of Portsmouth, NH and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother Philip Trasher, Charles Trasher and three sisters Louise Nonni, Ruth Shirley Trasher and Helen Krajeski.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday a 11:00 A.M in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will Tuesday before the funeral from 9:30A.M. to 11:00A.M. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Susan G.
