Obituary

Margaret S. (Denis) Gillam, beloved wife of Cdr. Harold R. Gillam and mother of Harold R. Gillam III and Joseph W. Gillam, died peacefully in her sleep on September 6, 2011, after a sudden illness.

She was the daughter of Joseph D. Kelleher, a native of Rathmore, Co. Kerry, Ireland, and Mildred A. Watson, of Massachusetts. Margaret, also known as Gretta, grew up in Lawrence, attended Merrimack College in North Andover and graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Lowell, Massachusetts.

A Registered Nurse who abided "have uniform, will travel", she trained or worked at Children's Hospital Boston, Boston City Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Danvers State Hospital and Baldpate, as well as Mount Sinai Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, concluding her career as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lowell.

Known by friends and family for her faithfulness, her encouragement and compliments, kind gestures and thoughtful reflections, playfulness and theatrical flair, she is deeply loved and greatly missed.

Mrs. Gillam is survived by two sons, Harold and his wife Tabitha and three grandchildren, Grace, Griffin and Grant, of Athol, Mass., and Joseph of Ithaca, N.Y. She also is survived by sister-in-law Joanna Kelleher of San Diego, Calif. Margaret is pre-deceased by her parents and dear brother, Joseph W. Kelleher.

Her Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, Mass. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. As requested by the family, there are no visiting hours.

In memory of Gretta Gillam, donations to Children's Hospital Boston for the care of pediatric patients with Spina bifida are respectfully requested in lieu of flowers.
