Marcia Murphy Countie, 78, of Salem and Naples, Florida, died on April 11, 2012 surrounded by her family at the Kaplan Hospice House after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Countie was the loving wife of Francis I Countie for the past 54 years and the daughter of the late Mildred Held Murphy and John Murphy of Salem. Mrs. Countie leaves 4 children and their spouses. Leonard and Olivia Countie of Peabody, Lori and Anthony Bermani of Salem, John and Tracy Countie of Marblehead and Brian and Kathleen Countie of Peabody. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Vanessa, Robert, Patrick, Melissa, Matthew, Kaylyn and Allison: a sister, Mrs. Pat Murphy Kerstein and her husband Dr. Malcolm Kerstein of Punta Gorda, Florida and Gloucester, a brother John Murphy and his wife Aldeen of Peabody and a very special aunt, Dot Noonan of Gloucester. Marcia also leaves two Brothers-In-Law, Ralph Countie and his wife Jeanette of Salem and William Countie and his wife Betty of Danvers as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Countie was also the sister of the late Paul B. Murphy of Peabody and the sister in law of the late Father Charles F Countie.

Marcia graduated from Salem High School in 1951, Salem Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 and continued her education at Emmanuel College before receiving her Masters Degree from Boston University in Sociology and Psychology.

Mrs. Countie went on to pursue her career of working with underprivileged children while with Catholic Charities and proceeded to become the State Director of The United Way of Massachusetts. She also spent a great deal of her time being active in various community affairs and charities. Mrs. Countie enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her family.

Her Funeral will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 9:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St Thomas the Apostle Church, 260 North St, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday, April 15, 2012, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes you make donations to The North Shore Cancer Center, 102 Endicott Street, Danvers, MA in Marcia's name.
