Retired Marblehead Fire Department Acting Lieutenant James I "Jim" Carey age 69, husband of Linda (Tavares) Carey of Marblehead died Sunday evening, April 4, 2010 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Marblehead, he was born in the Mary A. Alley Hospital on Franklin St the son of the late James I and Margaret (Carey) Carey Sr. Shortly after his graduation from Marblehead High School in the Class of 1960 he joined the Army National Guard where he served for a total of six years. Lt. Carey was appointed to the Marblehead Fire Department in 1966 and proudly served the Town of Marblehead for over 40 years until his retirement.
As a young man he was active with the "Oko's" (Okommakamesit) Fife and Drum Corps and the hand tub at firemens musters. He was also a member of the Gerry Five VFA for more than 40 years.
Later in life, Jim and his wife Linda have enjoyed raising and showing Portuguese Water dogs.
In addition to his wife, Lt. Carey is survived by a daughter Kathryn Carey of Ft. Myers, FL; a brother in law Gerald Tavares and his wife Kayne of Waterbury, VT; a sister in law Corey Dickerman of Palm Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral services on Saturday, April 10, 2010 in the Arland Dirlam Chapel at 12 Noon, Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead, MA . At the family's request there are no visiting hours. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Marblehead Firefighters' Scholarship Fund, P.O.
