SALEM – Mantina "Tina" Lefthes,  age 100, died Sunday morning, May 12, 2019 just shy of her 101 ^st birthday, at the Grosvenor Park Nursing Center in Salem.  Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Elizabeth (Kremonas) Lefthes and was a lifelong resident of the city.  She was a graduate of Salem High School in the class of 1936, Salem Teachers' College in 1940 and received her Master's Degree from Boston University.  She was the Reunion Secretary for the class of 1936 for over 65 years.

She taught for 40 years at Salem, High School and Salem Vocational High School and retired as Chairperson of the Business Department of the Salem High School.  She as advisor to the Salem High School Cheerleaders for 17 years.  From 1941 to 1945 she worked in the office of WESX as a script and coordinator.  During the was she worked part-time in the Victory Shift at Sylvania'a Loring Avenue Plant.  She also received her certificate from Wilfred Academy of Boston as a hairdresser.

During her lifetime she was actively involved with the Daughters of Penelope, a national Greek organization in which she was a charter member and served as President of the local Zelia Chapter, District Governor and was National Advisor of the youth chapter Maids of Athena.  She was honored by the Salem Public Schools as the recipient of the "Giving Tree" award.  In 2004 she was inducted into the Salem High School Athletic "Hall of Fame".  She served on the auxiliary Board of Directors of the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and was a life member of the Hellenic Women's Benevolent Association and the North Shore Medical Center Auxiliary.  She was also a member of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, the American Association of the University Women and the Peabody Essex Museum.  She was a member of the Philoptohos "Athena" and communicant of St. Vasilios Church of Peabody.  She was the proprietor of "Tina's Card Shop".

She was a survivor of a devastation 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 1953 that took place on the Ionian Island of Zante, Greece while she was visiting family.  Only two buildings survived the quake.

She is survived by a niece, Elizabeth Lefthes of Shrewsbury, a nephew Stuart Lefthes and his wife Colleen of Ipswich, two grandnephews, Todd Anastation and his fiancé Eleni Myrovalis of Leicester,  Henry Anastation and his wife Tanya of Germany and many cousins both in the United States and Greece.  She was predeceased by a beloved brother Nicholas and his wife Amelia Lerfthes.

Her Funeral  will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, corner of North St, Salem on Thursday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at St. Vasilios Church, 5 Paleologos St, Peabody at 10:00 a.m.  Visiting hours are Wednesday at the Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St, Danvers, Ma  01923 or to St. Vasilios Church,  5 Paleologos St, Peabody, MA 01960.  For additional information or online guest book please call 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome.com
