Obituary

M Marceline Thompson died peacefully at her Salem home at age 97 with her children at her side. The former Marceline Granger was born in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1916, where she attended Kingswood School for Girls and the University of Detroit. She was an early pioneer in women's athletics in the 1930's where she started and captained the fencing team, participated in intercollegiate tennis and other sports. Marceline went on to receive a degree in education with concentrations in math and Mandarin Chinese.

Marceline taught school, modeled, wrote fashion copy for a women's magazine before her marriage in 1946 in Detroit to Mr. Francis Joseph Thompson, Esq. of Salem Massachusetts (deceased in 1980). Mr. Thompson was active in State and local politics and was a nationally known attorney, specializing in labor law, while he and Marceline raised eight children in Swampscott.

Marceline maintained an active interest in civic and charitable affairs. She served on a number of boards and committees including: the Philomatheia Club of Boston College, the United Fund, the Heart Fund, the March of Dimes, several of Cardinal Cushing's special committees, the Eire Society (of which her husband was a past president) and the Marblehead YMCA. She was also vice president of the North Shore Charity League, president of Ste. Chretienne Academy Guild, and worked on the Castle Hill concerts in Ipswich.

She and her husband were members of The University Club of Boston, The Tedesco Country Club in Salem Ma, The Swampscott Beach Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club where she was made an honorary member.

She leaves behind eight children, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Five daughters include: Christina Thompson of North Carolina, Twinkelle Thompson-Wilkinson of Deerfield Beach Florida, Taafe Ezekiel, of Jupiter Florida, Tara Audette , of Salisbury Massachusetts and Tamie Thompson Burke of Marblehead Massachusetts. Her three sons include: Tarn Thompson of Ocala Florida, Tagh Thompson and Timothy Thompson of Salem Massachusetts.

A private mass was held by the Thompson Family on Saturday February 16, 2013 at St Thomas Church in Peabody. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
