Obituary

Luther P. (Lew) Winter, of Salem, MA, aged 94, passed away on Thursday, August 5 at Salem Hospital. Lew was born on May 28 th , 1927 in Arkona, OK to Gordon and Etta May (Kennemer) Winter, growing up in Denison, TX.

Lew served in the US Navy from 1944-1946, as a master electrician on the USS Haverfield Destroyer Escort. While in the Navy, he met his bride, Gloria (Carbone) Winter of 66 years, settling in Saugus, MA to start their family, and then they moved to Salem in 1968. He was an electrician and a master TV technician. Lew was the owner and operator of Highland Sales, an appliance and furniture business serving the North Shore. Over the course of his professional career Lew formed many great relationships, but none more important than the partnership with his son, David, whom he was in business with for 30+ years as Winter's Highland TV Service.

Lew enjoyed time with family which was most important to him. He was a hard worker and could problem solve and fix anything. Lew had many hobbies, including going fishing with his grandkids, gardening, watching movies, playing cards and doing puzzle books, attending his grandkid's baseball games and dance recitals, and family holiday dinners.

Lew was a gifted storyteller. He had the uncanny ability to always paint a colorful depiction from the past, so much so that he often had the entire room laughing. Lew gave his family unconditional love and had a unique magic in his soul – he was one of a kind and will truly be missed.

Lew is survived by his son David and his wife Cheryl Winter of Salem, MA, his grandson Adam and his wife Carrianne Winter, and their daughter Madeline, and his granddaughter Carolyn Poore and her daughter Meredith, as well as his brother Roger Winter, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, his parents and six siblings.
