Retired Salem Police Detective Lt., John W. Moran, age 91, former husband of the late Mayre (Abbott) Moran, died Friday November 14, 2014 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late William A. and Theresa (Ahern) Moran. He was raised in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in the class of 1943. Following graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps, stationed at Paris Island as a Rifle Instructor.

Following his discharge, he returned to Salem and was appointed to the Salem Police Department in 1949, during his 32 years with the Department, he served as a photographer and a fingerprint specialist. Mr. Moran also enjoyed photography as a hobby. Mr. Moran was also a private detective. He was a kind and generous person, knew many people in Salem and will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving him are his two children, David A. Moran of Salem, Denise Moran McGinn and her husband Mark of Danvers, his sister, Joanne Brennan of Danvers, two grandchildren, Sean and Adam and his wife Melissa and one great grandson John Daniel. He was predeceased by his daughter Deane Mary Moran and his sisters, June Tremblay and Priscilla Cole and a brother Walter Moran.

Mr. Moran's Funeral will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 9:30 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St.) Salem followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers at 10:30 A.M, relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Murphy Funeral Home on Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Burial will be private.
