Obituary

SALEM – Louise McKnight Dietrich, 76, of Salem, died unexpectedly at home Wednesday evening.

Born in Cambridge, a daughter of the late Frederick Simpson and Ethyle (Ansel) Deitrick, Louise spent her early years in Holliston, MA. She was raised and educated in Swampscott. Following her graduation from Swampscott High School in 1950, Miss Dietrich attended Skidmore College and, later, Brandeis University.


Before leaving for college, Louise spent summers at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead and, with her beloved Uncle John Magoon, spent summers cruising with him and his family on various Yacht Club cruises to the Maine Coast.
Louise was a long time member of the Corinthian Yacht Club.

She had a life long love of birding and spent early evening hours at the Marblehead Nature Sanctuary on Marblehead Neck and at other shore birding locations. She also enjoyed listening to classical music and opera.

Louise began her career in banking and finance in Boston, and moved around the country in that capacity eventually becoming a Vice President of Pioneer Investment in Boston. She lived in West Newbury, moved briefly to Marblehead, and then to Salem.

She is survived by three sisters; Charlotte Deitrick Sidler of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Rosamond Deitrick of Salisbury, Connecticut, and Frederica Deitrick of Washington, Ct; nine nieces and nephews: Mark Warnock, Caroline Randy, Justin Heffernan, Jessica Heffernan Ziegler, Kerry Heffernan, John Heffernan, Rebecca Updegraph, John Updegraph, and David Updegraph. She is also survived by seven grand nieces and nephews and by her cousin Ralph Magoon of Marblehead.


Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Memorial Service on Wednesday June 24 at 11:00 A.M at the Boston Yacht Club, One Front St., Marblehead, MA 01945. At the family's request there are no visiting hours. Interment will be held privately at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
