Louis “Lou” Mayle Sr. passed away on July 1, 2026, just days short of his 87th birthday, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, surrounded by his family, all of whom traveled from near and far to be by his side.
Lou was born on July 6, 1939, in Fremont, Ohio, to Irvin and Florence Mayle. He was the youngest son of nine siblings. He attended St. Joseph High School in Fremont, where he played several sports, including basketball, earning the nickname “Sparky.”
Lou spent his career at Industrial Printing Company in Toledo, Ohio, where he served as Vice President and Partner. He was deeply dedicated to his work and earned the respect of colleagues through his unwavering work ethic, integrity, and leadership. He believed in showing up, working hard, and providing for his family - values that guided him throughout his life. He was also a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes and carried a deep and abiding faith in every aspect of his life.
While studying at the University of Detroit, Lou met the love of his life, Diane Kenney They were married on July 6, 1963, and built a beautiful life together in Toledo, where they raised their three children: LuAnn, Marianne, and Lou Jr. Their marriage, spanning 59 years, was a remarkable partnership, full of Lou's devotion and care for Diane's health, until her passing in July 2022.
Affectionately known as “Grampy” or “Gramps,” Lou had a fighting spirit that perfectly matched his lifelong devotion to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. His greatest joy was simply being surrounded by the people he loved. He was happiest at the family’s Mayleville cottage on Lake Erie, where countless memories were made, or at he and Diane’s winter home in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they built lifelong friendships.
Whether he was out on the water, playing sports with his grandchildren, cheering on his favorite teams, or enjoying his "snacks" and a Yuengling, Lou found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He had a wonderfully dry, quick wit and a knack for delivering the perfect one-liner, keeping his family laughing with jokes that stayed with them until his final days.
Lou is survived by his loving family, including his children, LuAnn (Thomas) Gabel, Marianne (James) McNerney, and Louis (Dawn) Mayle; grandchildren Colleen (Christopher Omahan), Meghan, and Tommy (Katie Ward) Gabel; Kyle (Cindy) McNerney, Colgan (Kourtney) McNerney, Emily (Caesar) Fukuda, Corinne and Teddy Mayle; and greatgrandchildren Maeve and Brady McNerney and Wells Fukuda. He is also survived by his siblings Jean Wasserman, Jane Smith (Ken), several in-laws and an abundance of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his siblings: Jim Mayle, Jack Mayle, Janet Overmyer, Thomas Mayle, Joyce Ross, Patricia Mayle, as well as countless family and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 6149 Hill Ave., Toledo, Ohio, where the family will greet guests beginning at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate hospice providers at The Kaplan Family Hospice House, as well as the doctors and nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital, for the exceptional care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Toledo, Ohio or St. Joseph Central Catholic High School Booster Club, Fremont Ohio.
