Lois (Batchelder) Waldo, age 94, wife of the late Barton A. Waldo, Sr., died Friday evening, November 1, 2013 at Port Healthcare in Newburyport. Born in Winthrop on May 27, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Ross F. and Elsie P. (Reinhardt) Batchelder. Mrs. Waldo was a graduate of Winthrop High School in the class of 1937. Following graduation, she was employed with R.H. White in Boston, as a sales associate until marrying her husband, Barton and starting their family. All of her family was most important to her and she was very dedicated to them. She made her home in Rhode Island, Virginia and Massachusetts, traveling with her husband while he was working for the US Navy. Following his death, she lived with her son and his family in South Hamilton where she provided care to her grandchildren and other children in the neighborhood.
Mrs. Waldo was a member of the First Parish Church Congregational in Manchester by the Sea where she was very active. She enjoyed making knitted crafts for the Holiday Fair and was involved with the annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast. Several years ago, she celebrated her 90th birthday at First Parish Church with over 100 people in attendance. Mrs. Waldo was also an active member of several civic organizations including the Lions Club. She took great joy in sharing her love of knitting, socializing with her many friends and traveling throughout New England.
Mrs. Waldo is survived by two sons, Barton A. Waldo, Jr. and his wife Rosemary of Ipswich (formerly South Hamilton); Ross Ferren Waldo and his wife Joan of Warwick, RI; 3 grandchildren, Julia Eileen and her husband Samuel Sturgis Crocker of Essex, Elizabeth Barton and her husband William Snead of Seattle, WA, Kelley Jean and her husband Ray Gendron of Smithfield, RI; and 3 great grandchildren, Samuel Sturgis Crocker VI, Eileen Elizabeth Crocker and Karissa Gendron.
A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Waldo's life will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church, on the Village Green, Manchester by the Sea, on Monday December 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fidelis Hospice & Palliative Care (855-816-4777), 25 Railroad Square, Haverhill, MA 01830, which provided loving care to her in her final days.
