IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lillian Florence
Sweeney
July 12, 1922 – March 13, 2019
Lillian Florence Sweeney, age 96, died after a short illness on March 13, 2019. She spent the final days of her life at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers under the watchful eyes of the caring and compassionate staff at that facility. Lillian was a long time resident of Salem, and for the past seven years she resided at the John Bertram House in Salem.
Lillian was the daughter of the late William and Florence (Dube) Sweeney. She was educated at the
former St. James Grammar School and graduated from Salem High School in 1941. She was an active member of the "Class of '41" Alumni Committee. After graduation, she worked for General Electric during World War II and then for GTE Sylvania. Lillian was a member of the Sylvania Employee Association and served as President before retiring from the company after 30 years of employment.
While living at the John Bertram House, Lillian was quick to make friends. She was noted for her "smile and wink" which made those around her feel good. She was always looking to help others and to brighten their day. Lillian introduced the game of Pokeno to the residents and staff, and she ultimately would lead the games and provide treats and prizes. She also enjoyed crafting, especially painting. Many of these paintings covered the walls of her apartment, and many were also given as gifts to residents, staff and, family. Her apartment also contained many photos of nieces and nephews, along with photos of staff children and grandchildren. The John Bertram House says she was deeply loved and will be truly missed.
Lillian was predeceased by three brothers- Steven (who died in his youth); Wilfred (who was lost at sea during World War II); and John and his wife Helen (Howard). She is also predeceased by two sisters Irene and her husband Matthew Plutnicki; and Frances and her husband Armand Lavoie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
The service and internment will be held privately. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem. Donations may be made in her memory to either the Resident Activity Fund at John Bertram House, 29 Washington Square, Salem MA 01970, or to the Plummer House for Boys, 37 Winter Island Road, Salem MA 01970.
