Obituary

Kenneth Marshall Young, aged 86 of Marblehead, MA, died January 12th 2021 at The Lafayette Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara Borden Young. Born and raised in Marblehead, Kenneth was the son of the late Kenneth W. Young and Grace Smethurst Young. He graduated from Marblehead High School and North Shore Community College where he studied Criminal Justice. Kenneth was a member of the Old North Church, the Marblehead Philanthropic Lodge F. & A. M., and above all the Marblehead police force for 33 years. After retirement he worked as a crossing guard at the old middle school on Village Street for 9 years. He loved both jobs, and most of all the people they brought him close to. His love of people, family and strangers alike, was a central part of his life, and he could brighten the day of anyone he met. Generous, unassuming, funny and kind, Kenneth loved to travel, tend to his garden, and spend time with his family. He will always be remembered for his quick-witted humor, his optimistic outlook, and his willingness to help others and treat them with kindness. His pride and joy was his grandchildren, and his legacy and love of life will live on through them. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter Catherine Thompson, her husband George, and grandsons George, Douglas, and Russell of Beverly, MA; his daughter Deborah Lovett, her husband George, and granddaughters Rachel, Erin, and Jessica of Danvers, MA; and his son Charles M. Young of New York City. He is survived by his brother Russell Young of Port Jefferson, NY and predeceased by brothers Calvin and Robert Young, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, services will be private, with a memorial service honoring Kenneth to be held at a later date. Assisting the family with the arrangements is Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem.
