Salem….
Kathleen M. (Sweeney) Leahy, age 81, loving wife of the late F. Gerard "Jerry" Leahy of Salem, died in the Aviv Center for Living in Peabody, constantly surrounded by her family and friends during her illness.
A lifelong resident of Salem, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Shortis) Sweeney. Mrs. Leahy was a proud and active parishioner of St. James Parish where she received all of her Sacraments.
For many years she was employed by the City of Salem School Department in the cafeteria and Varian Corporation. Her greatest pride and joy was raising her four children and later being with her grandchildren, creating fond memories such as outings to Forest River Park and attending their many activities. She was a good friend to many, enjoying dinners with the Couples Club and a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the AOH Division 18 in Salem where she was awarded Irish Woman of the Year.
She will be remembered by all as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
Surviving her are her loving children Ellen Van Loon and her husband Bill of Salem, Kevin Leahy and his wife Bernadette of Beverly, Jack Leahy of Jupiter FL and her son-in-law Mark Marino of Lynnfield; her beloved grandchildren, Ryan Leahy, Will and Dillon Van Loon, Bridget, Conor and Sean Leahy, Jacqueline Marino and Aaron Leahy. In addition to her husband, she was the loving mother of the late Ann Marie Marino and sister of the late Joseph and John Sweeney, Mary Demers and Margaret Vieira.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, 156 Federal St., Salem at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Relative and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
