Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Katharine Frances Mack, on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the Bertram House assisted living facility in Salem, MA at the age of 95.

Katharine was predeceased by her parents Edward C. Mack Jr. and Vivian (O'Connor), brother Edward C. Mack III and sister-in-law Elizabeth (Mullaney), cousins Rosamond (O'Keefe) and Paul Waters of Newton, MA, Irene (O'Keefe) and Bill Melville of Newton MA and Leo O'Keefe of Milton MA.

Left to cherish Katharine's memory are nephew Edward B. Mack and spouse Kim (Sczerzen) of Bloomington, IL , their daughters Emily(14), Sophia(11) and Alyssa Katharine(7), cousin Margie O'Keefe of Cape Cod, MA and many cousins from the Waters, Melville and O'Keefe families including their 14 children, 32 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Katharine was a dedicated family member.  A most devoted daughter. A loving and loyal sister and aunt. A fun and interesting cousin.

She was selfless and spent many years caring for her mother Vivian. She had a close and supportive relationship with her brother Ed and his wife Liz and son Eddie.  Katharine and the Mack family would get together either in Salem or Wisconsin and visit every year. Her nephew Eddie would visit in his youth for weeks during the summer months. Katharine and Eddie enjoyed going to the Marblehead beach and visiting the Willows and going to concerts. Katharine always took Eddie to Red's sandwich shop in Salem and to Jerry's Department store when he visited. Eddie became friends with the neighbors and enjoyed visiting relatives. Katharine was Eddie's Godmother and they kept in regular touch as the years went by. Katharine attended Eddie's graduations both in High School and college.  Katharine and Eddie would always exchange cards on holidays and especially from all of Katharine's travel destinations.

Katharine was very close with her cousins Irene and Rosamond. They were like sisters. They were good friends and played together throughout their younger years in Salem. Katharine treasured a lifetime of festive holiday dinners, weddings and family gatherings spanning multiple generations with the Melville and Water's families. Katharine would visit their lake house in Meredith, NH each summer. Those days were filed with boating and lake fun with stories and reminiscing and lots of laughter.

A life-long resident of Salem, Mass. Her last 3 residences were on Flint Street, Church Street and at the Bertram House.

A proud Radcliffe (Harvard) Alumna, 1947. A lifetime and talented learner.  A dedicated and proud career Loomis Sayles investment firm employee.

Katharine had a passion to travel. She traveled many times both in the US and to international venues such as Bermuda and Ireland.

Katharine was a loyal friend.   A consistent and entertaining correspondent.  A generous volunteer and devotee of Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.  A student of history and world events. A woman of great dignity and style. An interested and informed investor. A joyful pianist. An informal family historian. A direct and honest person. A welcome and cheerful guest. Katharine had a wonderful laugh and told a good joke.

Visitation to take place on Tuesday, May 18 th from 9 to 10:30AM at Murphy Funeral Home located at 85 Federal Street in Salem.   Mass will occur right after the visitation at 11:00 at St. James Church located at 156 Federal Street in Salem. Interment to follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery located at 226 North Street in Salem.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made in Katharine's Memory to the Peabody Essex Museum located at 161 Essex Street, Salem MA 01970. The family would like to thank the staff at the Bertram House, 365 LLC aids Sharon, Dorothy and Patricia and the nurses at Care Dimensions Hospice for their compassionate care of Katharine and all of their support.

We love you, Katharine.
