Obituary

Julie Calvert Taylor, 98, died peacefully on October 13, 2022, at the Bertram House in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Taylor was born in Charleston, West Virginia on May 28, 1924, to the late Robert Neil Calvert and Alice Morris Calvert. She had one older brother, the late Hal Mills Calvert.

Taylor was a cat lover, avid mystery reader, a skilled Bridge partner, a world traveler, and a knitting enthusiast. Growing up, her family lived in Charleston, West Virginia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Westfield New Jersey. She graduated from Westfield High School in 1942 and attended Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1946, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Biology from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1948.

Taylor was a long-time resident of the North Shore for the past 72 years, living in Hamilton, Ipswich, Salem and Swampscott, Massachusetts. She was a charter member of the League of Women Voters in Hamilton and served on various board capacities. She and her husband at the time, Richard Clark Taylor, also joined the "Spotlighters'' theatrical group in Hamilton. Taylor was a member of Christ Church in Hamilton, and then the Church of St. Andrew of Marblehead. Through these organizations, she made lifelong friends.

Taylor used her scientific knowledge in her career as a grade 7 - 9 Mathematics and Science teacher at Shore Country Day School in Beverly from 1964-1990, serving as interim Head of Upper School for the last two years.

In retirement, Taylor volunteered in the HAWC Program (Healing Abuse Working for Change), an organization that provides support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Taylor specifically worked to support women in navigating the justice system.

Taylor is survived by two children, Philip Calvert Taylor and Linda Taylor Boyd, and their spouses, Merle Taylor, and Marc Boyd, as well as five grandchildren and their spouses, Cory Taylor and Jessica Taylor, Patrick Taylor and Julie Taylor, Ryan Taylor and Rebecca Taylor, Anne Cross and David Cross, and Evan Kettenring. Taylor was fortunate to meet all seven of her great grandchildren, in-person or virtually, before she died. They include Charles, Julie, Grace, Evelyn, Penelope, Eleanor, and Asher.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Bertram House of Swampscott or Care Dimensions Hospice.

A Memorial Service will be held at Church of St. Andrew, 135 Lafayette Street in Marblehead on Monday, November 14, 2022, at 12:30 PM.
