Judith Marie (Hughes) Ryan,"Judy", age 71, died Friday afternoon in the Kaplan Hospice House surrounded by her family. Her husband, the late Martin Patrick Ryan, hailed from Salem, predeceased her in 1972.
Born in Peabody the daughter of the late Jim and Margaret (Lynch) Hughes, was educated at St. John's Grammar and High Schools in Peabody . As a child, she spent her summer vacations at the beach surrounded by her large and loving family. While in High School, she worked at the former Lane's Drug Store in Salem where she met her husband. Continuing the summers that she enjoyed as a child, she organized summer vacations by the water with her family and friends; laughter, stories and fun always hung in the air.
An adventurous and outgoing person, Judy enjoyed, as a child, taking the bus to Revere Beach in the summer with her friends. As an adult, she played paint-ball, enjoyed downhill skiing, white water rafting, hiking, and scuba diving. She loved to travel, including a trip to Hawaii where she flew in a helicopter over sacred lands. She loved music and played the piano, also teaching her grandsons how to play.. She loved weddings and parties and dancing. She spent many years working for "the telephone" (company), in Salem and on Franklin St. in Boston. She had an open mind, positive attitude and a bright outlook on life. She enjoyed talking politics. Judy and her family lived in Miami Florida for 14 years when Judy became both a Miami Dolphins and UMiami fan. Later in life Judy worked as a classroom aide and lunch lady at the Winthrop School in Ipswich, a job she throughly enjoyed.
She is survived by four children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Patrick and Tina Ryan and his children Joshua, Joseph, Rachel, James, and her children Austin and Jadin of Beverly, Shannon Ryan of New York City, Kerry and her husband Neal Zagarella and their children Gus and Henry of Beverly and Seamus Ryan and his son James and Seamus' grandchildren Gracie and Anna; a sister Dorothy "Dottie" Tremblay of Beverly, her late sister, Carole Langlois, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family and friends. Judy loved being a grandmother always supporting their athletic and artistic endeavors. Judy included her children's friends as her own family and treated everyone as a loved one.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. , (cor of North St ) Salem . Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday evening in the Murphy Funeral Home, from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody .
