Judith Ann "Judy" (Baril) Burge age 43, wife of Edward J. Burge, Jr., died in the Kaplan Family Hospice House Tuesday morning following a five year battle with cancer.
Born, raised and educated in Lowell, the daughter of Margaret Baril of Salem and the late Raymond Baril, she was graduated from Lowell High School in the Class of 1983. Judy then moved into Boston's North End where she had lived for six years and had attended the Massachusetts College of Art until becoming an English major at Salem State College. She and her husband met while participating in the college's writing center helping other students. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in 1995, Judy earned her Master's Degree from UMass Boston in Women's Studies became a part time member of the UMass faculty. For the past two years, she had been a passionate, full time elementary school teacher at the Wright Middle School in Chelsea.
The true center of Judy's life was her family, husband Ed and their seven year old daughter Chloe Margaret Burge, a second grade student at the Saltonstall School in Salem. They were always doing something together which included going to the Beverly YMCA gymnastic center and the Salem Library.
Judy is also survived by a sister Suzanne Baril of Chelmsford; her mother and father in law Edward and Virginia Burge, Sr. of Saugus; three sisters in law Rosellen Furbush and her husband Mike of Saugus, Lori Jepson and her husband Ronald of Saugus and Deb Gonsalves and her husband Bob of Carver; six nieces Kelly, Kristi, Meghan, Rachel, Lindsay and Katrina and two nephews Michael and Joseph.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, November 14 at 4:00 P.M. in the Tabernacle Congregational Church, UCC, 50 Washington Street ~ Corner of Federal Street, Salem, MA 01970. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Interment will be private.
