Obituary

Joyce Lynne (Suchanek) Elliott passed away after a brief illness on July 23, 2024 surrounded by her loving children.

She was born in New York City in 1939, but her family returned to her mother's hometown, Marblehead shortly after her birth, and she was a proud Marbleheader for life.  WHIP!

She was the daughter of Rudolph Suchanek, and Barbara (Fader) Suchanek.  She graduated from Marblehead High School, and the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing. She went on to graduate with a BSN and MSN in Nursing from Salem State College.  She was a caring and very competent nurse, working at several local hospitals, Tower School, Marblehead  Public Schools, Devereux House and worked her way up from Staff Nurse to CEO of the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association.  Later in her career she worked in assisted living in Somerville and Revere.  She enjoyed her last job, Office Manager at Edward Jones Financial.  She was a member of the Rotary Club of Marblehead, Marblehead Harbor and Lynn Rotary Clubs.  Over her several decades in Rotary, she served as Secretary on several occasions, and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

While Joyce was a great nurse, her real passion was her family.  She grew up on Baldwin Road, surrounded by her aunts, uncles and cousins on her mother's side of the family.  She raised her children, Jim and Gretchen on Baldwin Road, surrounded by the next generation of the family.  She was a devoted Mimi to her five grandchildren.  She loved to tell anyone who'd listen about their achievements, adventures and accomplishments.

Joyce loved to travel and loved her trips to the Dakotas and northern Plains with cousin Amy and Uncle Phil and Aunt Janice.   She loved her adventures to visit Jim and his family in Kansas, using it as a base to see more of the country, go on a cruise to the Caribbean, road trips to New Orleans and all over the middle part of the country.  She was adventurous, flying in helicopters, or up for whatever thrill of the day was on tap.

Joyce will be missed by her many friends, cousins, and especially her immediate family.  She is survived by her son James F. (Jim) Elliott, Jr. of Overland Park, Kansas, and his wife Lisa, as well as her daughter Gretchen Sionkiewicz and her husband Daniel of Marblehead.  She leaves behind five adoring Grandchildren; Nicholas and Emma Sionkiewicz of Marblehead, Keegan Elliott of Lenexa, KS, Grace Elliott of Wichita, KS and Cullen Elliott of Cinnaminson, NJ.

Visiting hours will be held at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, Salem on Friday, July 26, 2024 from 10 am to 12 noon.  Her funeral service will follow at the funeral home starting at 12 noon.  Burial in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Rotary Club Annual Fund Share at  https://myrotary.org/en/donate.
