Joseph Murphy, beloved husband, esteemed golfer, and cherished member of the Salem community, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on June 10, 1948, in Salem, Massachusetts, he lived in this vibrant city throughout his life, embracing its charm and community spirit.
Joseph was a proud alumnus of Salem Public Schools, but he got his GED and attended PGA School in Vermont. He began his lifelong love affair with golf at the young age of 6 years old, taking his first steps in the sport as a caddy at Kernwood Country Club, in Salem, MA. Just a few days before the age of 17, he realized his dream of becoming a PGA golf professional, competing in tournaments across the United States, as well as in Scotland and the Bahamas. His promising career was interrupted by a tragic accident in 1972; however, through resilience and determination, he rehabilitated and continued to play, proudly holding membership in the PGA's disabled division for many years.
In 1967, while in Florida, Joseph met his current wife, Patricia, through her mother. They were married in 1980 and made their home in Salem, where they shared a life filled with love, laughter, ups and downs, and his unwavering passion for sports, #1 being golf. In addition to golf, Joseph enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, and most other sports; and he was especially fond of his dogs and cats, often finding joy and companionship in their company.
Joseph Murphy is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Murphy, who was his steadfast supporter and partner in life. He is also survived by his borther Tom Murphy, of Punta Gorda, FL, his niece, Elizabeth "Betsy" Murphy, and her daughter, Crystal, both in MA, and his nephews Jeff Murphy, Michael Murphy, and niece Deann Murphy-Black. We also want to include Joanne and Fred Moir, family members. He also has many cousins and close friend, Jackie Sealund, who has been a huge help to Pat and Joe in Joe’s care. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
There will be a simple cremation for Joseph Murphy, with no special services or other extras at this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joseph's memory may be made to a local animal shelter, reflecting his love for animals and commitment to the community. Also, because Joe was a real sports fanatic, with golf being his #1 passion, please consider making a donation to your local youth sports programs, especially ones that help disadvantaged or disabled kids, in Joe’s honor.
