Joseph J. "Jack" Callahan, age 84 of Marblehead, died suddenly Monday, June 9th, 2008 in the Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by his family. He and his beloved wife Joanne "Jody" (Wright) Callahan had shared 55 loving years together.

Born in Malden the son of the late John and Mabel (Deery) Callahan, he was raised in both Swampscott and Lynn. Mr. Callahan had attended St. John's Elementary School in Swampscott and was graduated from Lynn English High School in the Class of 1941. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served aboard Navy ships during World War II.

Following his discharge he continued his education at Boston University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. In 1953 he and his wife married and settled in Marblehead where they raised their family.
Mr. Callahan was employed in International Chemical Sales beginning his career with McKesson and Robbins, later with Sobin Chemical (which later became International Mineral and Chemical) and retired from Treibacher of Austria.
A daily communicant of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead, he was an active member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead where he enjoyed playing tennis. Mr. Callahan was also an avid Patriots fan and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family.

A devoted father and grandfather, he is survived by five children Kevin Callahan, MD of Swampscott, Kendall Georges of Marblehead, Kristin Callahan and her spouse Jane Muller of Marblehead, Kyle Wiley and her spouse William Wiley of Marblehead, Karen Weeden and her spouse David Weeden of Peabody, eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anna Georges, Katie and Abby Callahan-Muller, Jesse and Emma Wiley, all of Marblehead and Zachary and Spencer Weeden of Peabody; a brother and sister in law Keith Callahan and his wife, Ellen of Dennis, MA; a sister Claire O'Brien of Newburyport, MA, several nieces and nephews and many friends in Europe.
He was predeceased by a sister Bernice "Bunny" Callahan and brother in law Daniel O'Brien.

His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 81 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, Ma. 01945. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
