Joseph Anthony Diorio "Sonny", age 75, loving husband of the late Judith Moylon Diorio with whom he shared 47 years of marriage, died at home Thursday afternoon, May 21, 2009, surrounded by his family.
Born in Boston, the son of the late Joseph J. and Viola (d'Este) Diorio, he was raised and educated in Lewiston Maine, where at age 17 he left school and entered the United States Air Force.
He was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska and received and Honorable Discharge. After his tour was over he married and went to Bentley College where he graduated in the Class of 1964 and became an accountant. He worked in Accounting for 23 years at United Shoe Machine Corporation.
"Sonny" was very active in his childrens sport activities, where he coached the Dolphins baseball team in the Rec League, the Cardinals in Little league, and the Packers football team as an Assistant coach. His other hobbies included Computers which began with the Commodore 64. He has spent the last 15 years researching and documenting his family tree and has been able to estabish his roots back to the 1800s. In 2004 he visited family in Italy that he found through his family tree research. He assisted in the start up of the computer program for St. Mary's in Beverly. He was also and electronics whiz, enjoying CB Radios having the handle "Meatball". Joseph was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans
At the core of Mr. Diorio's life and endeavors was his family, whom he loved deeply.
Mr. Diorio is survived by four children a daughter, Terri Tirabassi of Salem, three sons Joseph Diorio of San Diego, CA, Thomas Diorio of Wrentham, John Diorio of Stoneham, two sisters, Theresa Brown of Nashua, NH, Pauline Fee of Tampa, Fl , a brother, John Diorio of Groveland, seven Grandchildren, four Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Thursday May 28 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral service at 10:00 A.M in Blake Memorial Chapel, 30 Grove St., Salem, MA,. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday May 27 from 4 to 8 P.M. .
