Joseph F. Bonfanti, age 89, husband of the late Jeannette (DeFrancesco) Bonfanti, died Thursday, March 11, 2010, in the Twin Oaks Nursing Home, Danvers following a brief illness.
Born in Wakefield, MA the son of the late Leonard and Angela Bonfanti, he was raised and educated in Peabody. Once he completed his high school education, Mr. Bonfanti became employed by Versa Tanning in Peabody until joining the Navy at the outbreak of World War II. A decorated veteran, Mr. Bonfanti served as a gunners mate aboard LST ships and traveled to many areas including the European/African Theater, the Asiatic/Pacific Theater, the Philippines as well as the American Theater of operation.
Following his discharge he returned to Versa Tanning in Peabody and followed the business to Franklin, NH where he raised his family and lived for many years. He then returned to the North Shore with his family and permanently resided in Salem, MA. and was employed as a shop superintendent for Bobcat Leather in Peabody.
A devoted husband and loving father, he enjoyed his family and grandchildren as well as playing golf and his weekly trips to Suffolk Downs.
Mr. Bonfanti is survived by two sons Leonard Bonfanti and his wife Dawn of Middleton, MA and John Bonfanti and his wife Laurie of Peabody; two sisters Josephine DeFrancesco of New Hampshire and Rose Moscatto of Peabody; four grandchildren Joshua and Amanda Bonfanti of Middleton and Leah and Jennifer Bonfanti of Peabody; one great grandson Travis McDonald; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by six siblings Leo, Charles, Ignatius, Emmanuel, and Mary Bonfanti and Constance Sacco.
His funeral will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 8:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
