John F. "Jack" Tierney, age 85 loving husband for 64 years of Gertrude (Eagen) Tierney died Monday evening in the Kaplan Family Hospice House Monday evening.
Born in Salem the son of the late John and Katherine (Feeney) Tierney, he was raised and educated in Salem Schools. A graduate of Salem High School, Mr. Tierney became employed by New England Telephone Company until proudly serving the United States Navy during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to the Telephone Company and had been assigned as a manger in several locations including Salem, Gloucester, Lynn, and Lowell. He retired as the Plant Manager of the Danvers office after 42 years of employment and was a member of the New England Telephone Pioneers.
He enjoyed all sports, especially participating in his children's and grandchildren's athletics. Mr. Tierney was one of the founders of the Salem Little League and had coached both the Indians and the Philly's.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children John "Jack" Tierney and his wife Caryl of Malone, NY, Robert "Bo" Tierney of Salem and Richard Tierney and his wife Diane of Newburyport; six grandchildren Jennifer Bosely of Malone, NY, Moira Poitras of Brimfield, MA, Amy Trudeau of Malone, NY, Joshua Tierney and his wife of Newburyport, Ryan and Jillian Tierney of Newburyport; six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a great grandson Nathaniel Tierney.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 10:30 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
