Salem….

John L. "Smith" Ogasian, age 83, loving husband for 57 years of Theresa (Levesque) Ogasian of Salem died in Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Tuesday morning following an illness of several weeks. He and his wife had married on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950.

A lifelong resident of Salem, he was born in Salem the son of the late barber Paul and his wife Gladys A (Poor) Ogasian. He was educated in Salem schools, graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1942 and then entered the United States Army.

During World War II, he was stationed in the European Theater of Operations and had received the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Medal. Following his discharge, Mr. Ogasian was a short order cook at the Salem Diner in Salem for over 30 years.

He then became employed by the United States Postal Service for 20 years until his retirement from the South Boston Postal Annex in 1989.

A longtime, active member of the Drum and Bugle Corps he was a lifetime member of the V.F.W Witch City Post 1524 in Salem. Mr. Ogasian was also a dedicated Boston Bruins Fan.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, John and his wife Debra Ogasian of Dover, NH, and Mark and his wife Sandra Ogasian of Peabody; two sisters Dorothy Moriarity and her husband Charles of Danvers and Eleanor Pietrini of Beverly; seven grandchildren Jennifer and her husband Michael Sibley, Jill and her husband Charles Piazza, U.S Marine Reservist Jonathan Ogasian, Danielle Ogasian, Kellie Sellers and her husband and PFC Jason Ogasian, U.S. Army and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Paul Ogasian and a granddaughter Jessica M. Ogasian.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
