John "Jack" Edward McCarthy, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Jack was born on September 6, 1932, to Edith Perrault and John McCarthy, Sr. in Salem, Massachusetts. The McCarthy family continued to reside in Salem and Jack and his siblings attended Salem Public Schools throughout their early years.
For all his adult life, Jack worked as a carrier for Salem Post Office. He also served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a veteran in the Korean war. Jack married Ann "Nancy" McCarthy and lived in Salem for many years with their two daughters, their oldest Kristin McCarthy and their youngest, the late Karin Settles. In their later years, Jack and Nancy also lived in Peabody and Newburyport.
Jack was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins games. He also enjoyed listening to Neil Diamond albums and indulging in sweet snacks such as Oreo cookies whenever he got the chance. Additionally, he loved to spend his time visiting with old friends at the mall or sitting by the water at the Newburyport Boardwalk, whereby some residents, he was known as the "Mayor of the Boardwalk."
Jack is predeceased by his wife Nancy McCarthy and his daughter Karin Settles. He is survived by his daughter Kristin McCarthy and her husband Steven Hickey of Shutesbury, Massachusetts, his grandchildren Jarad Settles, Jessica Settles, Megan Lennox, Erin Walsh, and Michael Hickey.
