Obituary

John Joseph Marshall III, age 67, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Salem, died on May 28, 2012 at St Vincent's Hospital in Worcester following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.


Born in Salem, the loving son of the late John J. Marshall II and Estelle M. (Provencher) Marshall, he received his elementary education at St. Mary's Grammar School in Salem and was a member the first graduating class of Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody. Following his graduation, he was honored to join the United States Navy, proudly serving the country first as a SEAL and later as a machinist mate in the submarine fleet.


After separating from the service John resumed his education at UMass Amherst receiving Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. His professional engineering career began at Combustion Engineering and spanned over 35 years of expertise in power systems. Later roles at Riley Stoker Corp took him to locations all over the world before his eventual retirement from Stone & Webster Inc.


An outdoor enthusiast, John was a long time member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and active with the Boy Scout Association's Mohegan Council, where he dedicated many years to both youth and adult development programs. An avid traveler, he enjoyed visiting amusement parks throughout the US with a special enjoyment for riding roller coasters. A proud veteran he was a member of his local VFW Post and DAV Chapter.


In addition to his mom, he is survived by two children John Joseph Marshall IV and his wife Carin of Swampscott, and Diane M. Givner and her husband David of North Andover; two sisters Joyce Walsh and her husband Charles of Salem and Sandra Appleton and her husband Daniel of Ipswich; a brother Philip Marshall of Beverly; and four grandchildren Sydney, John, Simon, and Sadie.


His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 2 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (corner of North St.) Salem, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
