IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John David
Keenan, Sr
April 26, 1936 – October 16, 2018
John D. Keenan, 82, of Salem, peacefully departed this world surrounded by his family on October 16, 2018 after a long battle with multiple myeloma, joining his late wife, Emma Carnevale Keenan, who died in 1994 from lung cancer. John was the son of the late Jack and Harriet (Nourse) Keenan and brother to the late Edith Keenan. John was born in Salem on April 26, 1936 and remained a lifelong Salemite. He attended Salem High School and played football, hockey and baseball before graduating in 1954. John married his teenage sweetheart Emma Carnevale on May 12, 1957. They had 3 children: Debbie, Dan and John.
John proudly served eight years in the Naval Reserves as a 2nd class Torpedoman and received an honorable discharge in 1961. He worked as a Purchasing Agent at Flynntan in Salem for thirty-two years and the Essex County Sheriff's Department for ten years before becoming a snowbird with his longtime companion, Kay, in Clearwater, FL.
Affectionately known as Pappy, John was a devoted family man who could often be found playing games and watching movies with his five grandchildren (the "Pappy5"). He loved traveling, golfing, beaching and boating. An avid Boston sports fan, he was calling out the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots until the day he died.
John's stunning blue eyes and quick wit are already missed by his family. His life will forever be cherished by his children: Deborah Van Etten and her husband Joseph McCarran of Salem, MA; Daniel Keenan and his wife Amy of Palm Desert, CA; John Keenan and his wife Kara McLaughlin of Salem, MA; his 5 grandchildren: Christopher Van Etten, Aidan Keenan, Emma Keenan, Samantha Keenan and Erin Keenan; and his cherished companion, Kay Terrazano.
