Obituary

Salem, MA – John "Jack" Hughes of Salem, MA age 85 passed away peacefully at Masconomet Rehabilitation in Topsfield on June 3, 2019. Born in Salem, John was the son of the late Bessie (Brennan) and John J. Hughes Sr..  He was raised and educated in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1950.  An honorably discharged veteran, John proudly served his country for 8 years as a member of the US Navy.  He served on the USS Coral Sea CVA 43.  After the Navy, John became a Salem firefighter where he was part of "the brotherhood" for 31 years before retiring in 1989.

Jack enjoyed walking all over the city, watching little league baseball and softball games.  He was a Tiger Woods fan and loved watching golf, as well as, the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics.  But most of all "Grampy Jack" loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Jack leaves behind his daughter Ann Marie Penick of Danvers, his sons Kevin, John, Daniel and Kenneth Hughes, all of Salem.  His grandchildren Dan "Dino" Hughes, Shannon Hughes, Shawn Hutchinson, Dana Penick, Jesse Camacho, Dylan Hughes, Tylor Hughes and Destinee Hughes.  His great grandchildren Daniel Hughes III, McKenzie Hughes, Bailey Hutchinson, Shawn Hutchinson Jr., Lilyana Hughes and Jaxcyn Hughes.  He also leaves behind his former wife and best friend Ann (Hughes) Dunleavy of Peabody as well as a special daughter-in-law Renee Hutchinson of Salem.   He is predeceased by his siblings: Mary L'Italien, Eleanor Conway, Elizabeth Claveau, Dorothy L'Abbe, Anna Burgess, William Hughes and Robert Hughes.

Visiting hours for John will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 1 to 4 PM at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.) Salem, MA 01970.  Funeral service will be held on Monday June 10, 2019 at 10AM also at Murphy Funeral Home.  Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, 57 Orne St., Salem, MA 01970.
