John J. "Jim" Hosking, age 67, loving husband for 21 years of Linda D. (Gamble) Hosking of Marblehead died early Friday morning October 8, 2010, in the North Shore Medical Center, Salem following a lengthy battle with cancer.


Born in Boston, the son of the late John Redvers and Christina (Elliott) Hosking, he was raised and educated in North Andover. As a high school student, Jim was a member of the North Andover High School Band and later was a Drum Major when he served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Jim received his Bachelor's Degree in Business from Northeastern University in 1975. He then began what would become a 35 year career with the New England Telephone Co Yellow Pages, until retiring from Verizon.


As a member of the Boston Yacht Club, Marblehead, he was a passionate sailor and loved being on the water. At one time he served as a Marblehead, PHRF Fleet Captain and was also a broker with Sail Boats NorthEast at Little Harbor in Marblehead. Jim enjoyed sports cars and driving his restored Austin Healey.


Jim was happiest spending time his family and friends. His gourmet meals were enjoyed with great conversation and a smile following a day of sailing, skiing or gardening. He loved his cats and his Airedale, "Piper".


In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Kimberly Whitney and her husband, Michael of Newmarket, NH, his "Bonus Grandchildren" Heather and Katie Whitney of Hopkinton, MA and a nephew Josh Butler of Manitou Springs, CO.

He was predeceased by his twin sister Christina Mary Hosking.


His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Interment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
