Retired Salem Firefighter John E "Jack" Rubin, age 67, husband of Margaret I (Young) Rubin of Peabody, died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Salem, the son of the late John and Mary (Dunn) Rubin, Jack was educated in Salem school. Following his graduation from Salem High School, he entered the United States Army serving as a Military Policeman as well as a member of an Army football team during the Viet Nam War.
Following his discharge, Firefighter Rubin was appointed to the Salem Fire Department in 1971, serving the City of Salem for 37 years until retiring in March of 2008. During his career he had received his degree in Fire Science from North Shore Community College and had been stationed at Engines 4 and 2, retiring from Engine 5 on Loring Ave.
A dedicated husband and father, he was dedicated to his family. Jack had coached his sons on Peabody Little League as well as football. His passion in life was Golf. If there was a chance to play golf with his sons or friends, Jack was there. He was frequently found at the Salem Municipal Golf Course or traveling with his friends to play a round.
He was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Veragua Council 76 in Salem.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons Michael D. Rubin of Peabody, Christopher L Rubin of NY, NY and Thomas E Rubin of Peabody and three grandchildren Katie, Patrick and Kobe.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 9:45AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody Ma. 01960. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
