Swampscott….

John D. "Jack" Hodges, age 91, husband of the late Lillian (Ryan) Hodges, died early Wednesday morning at the John Bertram Home in Swampscott.

Born in Somerville, the son of the late Ray and Catherine (Fitzpatrick) Hodges, he attended local schools and was graduated from Somerville High School. Mr. Hodges then attended NewPrep in Cambridge and was graduated from Harvard University in the Class of 1940.

During World War II, Mr. Hodges served in the United States Army Air Corps as a Navigator in all three war theaters until being honorably discharged in 1945.

In 1983 he retired as the President of Cape Pond Ice Co. in Gloucester.

Mr. Hodges is survived by a son John D, Hodges, Jr. of Tewksbury; 2 daughters Lillian "Cissie" Carty and her husband Jay of Marblehead and Mary Doherty of Syracuse, NY; eight grandchildren Melissa Carty Hoey of Salem, Benjamin Doherty of Charlottesville, VA, John Hodges of Daytona Beach, FL, Katherine Carty-Fogg of Swampscott, Molly Doherty of NY, NY, Andrew Hodges of NH, Crystal Hodges of Tewksbury and Rebecca Hodges of Hamilton; four great grandchildren Riley and Ryan Doherty of Charlottesville, VA and Emma and Hannah Fogg of Swampscott and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister a sister Ruth McGreenery.

His Funeral will be held on Saturday January 10, 2009 at 10:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 81 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead.
